The daughter of celebrated artist Peter McIntyre, Sara was nine years old in 1960 when her family first came to the little settlement of Kākahi, 20 km from Taumaranui, in the King Country. The King Country inspired Peter McIntyre to paint what many consider to be some of his finest work. 50 years on, Sara McIntyre is also capturing the landscape and people of Kākahi and its neighbouring towns. Sara’s framing device is the screen of her iPhone and Nikon SLR. Pictured holding a camera at the tender age of 9 years old, Sara’s passion for photography has never waned.
While she shares a love of the King Country light and the landscapes with her father, her most striking work has been her portraits and scenes of everyday life, observed while on her rounds as a district nurse. Treating people in their homes has given Sara a unique understanding and affection for the region's day-to-day realities and its people, which is reflected in her remarkable collection of photographs. With warm text throughout and an essay on her photographic practice by Auckland Art Gallery curator Julia Waite, this book is a beautiful tribute to a unique part of New Zealand and to the work of an outstanding photographer.
Sara McIntyre was born in Wellington and worked there as a neonatal intensive care nurse for several years. In 2010 she moved to Kākahi in the King Country, where she had been coming to since her family arrived there for a fishing trip in 1960. While working as a district nurse, based at Taumarunui Hospital, she had the opportunity to further explore the area as a photographer. Her work came to public attention five years ago when she started posting her images on Instagram, quickly attracting a very large audience. This led to her first solo exhibition at the Anna Miles Gallery in 2016.
